What the planned centre of excellence is meant to offer
Today, families of children with neurological conditions lose valuable time searching for a diagnosis, therapy and support. The planned centre of excellence aims to change that: early diagnosis, intensive therapy and support for parents in one place.
A first point of contact for all of Austria
The centre of excellence is to be the point of contact for all children with a suspected neurological injury. The goal is a rapid assessment. Medical treatment, intensive therapy and orthopaedic care work together across disciplines, in one place.
Early intervention from the 4th month of life
At its heart is an individual, evidence-based intensive therapy programme: from the 4th month of life until at least age three, twice a year for at least three weeks. After that, an annual rehab programme with a health check up to age 18 ensures continuity. In addition, there is career and life counselling and guidance for adulthood.
Therapy that makes a difference in everyday life
- Individual therapies relieve symptoms and pain, prevent secondary conditions, improve or maintain mobility and prevent or correct joint misalignments.
- Early physical intervention also supports cognitive development.
- Assistive devices are provided together with partner orthopaedic workshops.
Parents are supported, not left alone
Parents are guided and supported. Case management by the social services team helps coordinate further treatment at home and ensures a smooth handover to therapy in everyday life.
Research and international networking
The centre is to be internationally connected, attract specialists from abroad, conduct research and offer training. A registry programme and better screening are to enable early diagnoses, and the guidelines for paediatrics are to be developed further. Being close to Vienna is therefore especially important.
A place surrounded by nature
The centre of excellence is to be a calm and positive place surrounded by nature, with generous outdoor areas for children. In short: a place of excellence.
